Beware the eBay scam which sees fake buyers steal goods A new eBay seller is nearly 1,500 out of pocket after believing he sold a state of the art laptop, only to fall victim to a scam.
Haroon listed his Microsoft Pro Surface and a type cover pandora charms sale online for 1,249.99 on eBay last month when someone, who appeared to be using a genuine business account, used the 'buy it now' option. It was the first time he had used the online marketplace. This, he says, gave him the confidence to proceed with the transaction and that if it turned out to be fraudulent in the meantime, he could cancel the delivery. But his original hunch was true and learnt the hard way that fraudsters are operating all over the internet. Six days after shipping the item and paying 150 for delivery, he received a strange e mail from Paypal stating 550 was needed for the money to be released. He called Paypal who informed him the account was fraudulent it was locked and registered in Australia. He spoke to eBay who told him he should have waited for payment before sending the item a fact he claims was left out when he rang eBay before. When he contacted eBay again asking if it was liable for the loss, an employee said no and suggested that if he was unhappy, he should go through a small claims court. He says he contacted one last time, at the end of the April, asking to speak to a manager. An adviser took down the details and said he would be contacted within 48 hours but wasn't. Haroon gave This is Money the precise time the original phone call was made to eBay, in which he outlined his concerns about the buyer. Ebay told This is Money that it has listened to this call. It claims to have told Haroon to take no action and not respond to the buyer. It said that at no point did it use any phrases that could be interpreted as confirmation he should send the item and says that items should not be dispatched without payment being received. GET IN TOUCH Have you fallen victim to an online scam?A spokesman added: 'eBay members complete thousands of successful transactions each day and we make significant investments annually to ensure we're the most trusted way to shop. 'We're sorry to hear one of our members failed to follow our advice and subsequently became the victim of a scam. 'As a pioneer in ecommerce, eBay has developed some of the most effective approaches in combating bad activity over the past two decades. 'But fraudsters use very sophisticated methods to try and circumvent trusted website security. 'We always advise sellers to report any suspicions to us and to wait until they have received payment before dispatching items.' Furthermore, eBay has confirmed that the account which 'bought' the item was a genuine business account, which describes itself as 'offering mobile marine services across Brisbane the Gold Coast.' However, it had been compromised by a fraudster, who managed to access it by using the correct log in details. It says it's impossible for it to tell how it happened, but the most common way is that the genuine account owner clicked on a phishing e mail link which then gives the fraudster access to the account. But despite this, eBay refuses to refund Haroon for his lost item.
